Machine of the Day

Challenger tractors at Cereals 2009
The Challenger ‘C’ Series of tracked tractors will be making its working debut at the Cereals Event 09. These latest models provide unrivalled comfort, ease of use and a host of additional features.
“The past autumn demonstrates, if any further proof was needed, the distinct advantages to be gained from using the Challenger Mobil-trac system,” says Martin Hamer, National Sales Manager – Challenger. “At the Cereals Event we will also be explaining the four key points that optimise tractor performance.
“These include: The track footprint, contour following ability, suspended track frame and low ground pressure. These are unique Challenger track tractor attributes, which are not available from other machines – fitted with either tracks or wheels,” he adds.

Challengers feature the longest tracks in the industry that not only create a large footprint to distribute the weight even across a wide area, but also guarantee optimum traction is achieved. The very low operating ground pressure, as low as 4.5psi, minimises soil damage from compaction and reduces the need for further, deeper cultivations.

Moreover, new Extreme Agricultural Belts, proven on B series tractors in the 25in format, are now available throughout the ranges from 25in to 30in to offer users the best combination of high traction with low running costs. “The Challenger Mobil-trac system is also equipped with the unique OptiRide suspension system, which helps improve traction by enhancing ground contact. This works in combination with the floating mid-wheels that maintain correct belt tension and even contact across all the ground,” adds Mr Hamer. “This suspension system also provides the best operator comfort.”

‘C’ Series Challengers – Comfort, Control and Convenience

The new ‘C’ Series Challengers, which make their UK working debut at the Cereals Event, feature a host of new, innovative features to further improve operator comfort and control. Experienced Challenger operators and those new to machines, will be struck by the spacious cab that is now fitted with climate control as standard.

Inside there is a completely new TMC II (Tractor Management Centre II) operating console, along with a new, clear and easy to use dashboard that displays key operating information.

Challenger’s industry-leading TMC Armrest with integral Display is one of the most comprehensive operating systems available, providing fingertip control of a host of functions. This is now even easier to use with its completely new large (7in/178mm) colour screen, which now also offers full ISOBus control of implements.

As soon as a compatible implement is connected (via the special ISO socket) an icon appears on the TMC Display. After pressing the button next to the icon the implement’s setting and operating menu ‘pages’ appear on the Display just as if they were on a separate monitor. Moreover, information can be transferred to and from the unit via standard SD card and USB flash ports.

As well as its ISOBUS capabilities, the TMC Display continues to provide all the tractor performance management, setting and operation functions as before. The One Touch Headland Management sequence is now even more comprehensive and easier to use. One Touch allows operators to store 35 functions for six different machines, and replay these at the touch of a button. This sequence can now be programmed and edited on the screen, without the need to record the entire sequence again.

The TMC Display also sets up, runs and displays the information from the optional AutoGuide, automatic steering system as well as Video input option. In fact, every conceivable tractor function is monitored, controlled and set on its screen. For example the flow and timing of up to six electronically-controlled spool valves can be set on the TMC Display and be included in the One Touch system.

A high output hydraulic system is also new. Along with new fingertip switches, mounted at the front of the TMC Armrest, the system offers even finer control of flowrate and timing for precise implement operation.

Designed specifically for work in extreme conditions is a new ‘Poly’ mid-wheel option, which have a hard-wearing polyurethane working surface. These are considerably harder wearing than the standard rubber-coated versions and will extend working life in harsh environments because of their high resistance to chipping and damage.
