Tuesday 8th October 2002

Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited held their weekly sale of primestock on Tuesday when they sold 18 cattle, 1630 lambs and 794 cast ewes and tups.

Prime cattle met a similar trade on the week selling to 106p for a Limousin x Galloway bullock consigned by Messrs W Wallace & Son, Fingland, Dalry and purchased by Haining Butchers, Kirkcudbright.  The heifer section was topped at 99p for a Charolais from Boreland of Parton.

The 1630 lambs met a stronger demand selling to a top price of £80 or 121.2p for Texels consigned by Messrs W & M Blyth, Blowplain, Balmaclellan.  Well fleshed lambs ranging from 38 – 42 kg were especially well bid for with the majority being in excess of 105p per kg.  Overall average rose by 10p on last week to level at 102.2p.  Buyers are certainly being more selective now and better fleshed lambs are attracting a considerable premium.  With this trend likely to continue consigners are requested to try and have more finish in their lambs.

The cast ewe section was topped at £49 for a pen of five Texel ewes which were consigned by Messrs Douganhill Farms.  All classes of ewes were also dearer on the week with the sale average levelling at £23.96.  Blackface ewes made to £25.20 whilst Scotch Mule s topped at £38.80.
