WELSHPOOL CATTLE AND SHEEP SALE

Welshpool Livestock Sales have pleasure in announcing an increased entry of prime cattle on Monday 16th February which met an excellent trade with the overall average levelling at 105.37ppkg which equates to 193.8ppkg deadweight with the best peaking at an equivalent of 208ppkg deadweight. Yet again the company of eleven buyers present were asking why there were so few cattle about to meet this strong demand and they all requested more cattle for next week. With it being the store cattle sale next Monday, three more buyers are expected to be present which will create more demand. Steers averaged 112.72ppkg and heifers 104.36ppkg. Medium heifers to 116ppkg presented by G Bound & Son, Cefn Bach, Oakley Park (av 103.54ppkg) and purchased by Rikki Lloyd, Welshpool. A limousin cross heifer sold by A Gardner & Sons, Neuadd Goch, Dolfor made 107ppkg and purchased by Corwen Butchers. With two heifers making 103ppkg shown by RE Jones, Farchwell, Llanfihangel and AK & RC Tudor, Lower Heblands. Heavy heifers to 123ppkg presented by G Bound & Son, Cefn Bach, Oakley Park (av 104.52ppkg) and purchased by Rikki Lloyd, Welshpool. Two limousin cross heifers making 115ppkg presented by A Gardner & Sons, Neuadd Goch, Dolfor and WG & DE Woosnam, Upper Gwestydd, Newtown which were purchased by Corwen Butchers and John Langford, respectively. John Langford also purchased a heifer presented by A Gardner & Son, which made 111ppkg and a charolais cross heifer making 109ppkg by D Jones, Tynyfawnog, Llanfair Caereinion.

Prime Hoggets
An entry of 3263 hoggets with an overall average of 136.24ppkg, being ten pence per kg greater than 2003. Cull Ewes and Rams
A total of 1,320 ewes and rams were forward with ewes averaging £35.60 per head. Ewes to £66.00 per head presented by IJ & MEO Jones, Plas Madoc, Dolfor Rams to £68.00 per head presented by GH Bayliss & Son, Borfa Wen, Kerry

Calf Section Another increased entry of 18 calves met with an excellent trade with all presented sold. Top price of the day was £250 for a charolais cross bull calf presented by JM Evans & Partners, Dolobran Hall, Pontrobert. From BJ Maiden, View Farm, Marton was a simmential cross bull calf which sold for £248. Overall simmential cross bull calves averaged £210.63. From the same home was a charolais cross bull calf which made £245. Again from BJ Maiden was a simmential cross heifer calf which made £152. LImousin cross heifer calves sold to £130 from JR Thomas & Son, Edgebold, Sarnau and averaged £83.33 overall. Freisian bull calves sold to £19 from J & J Beavan & Sons, Winsbury, with an average on freisian bull calves of £16.60. Store Sheep Section
A sharper trade in all sections with a stronger demand from a good crowd of buyers. Store lambs sold to £90 for texel rams from DA & SJ Jones, Dyffryn. Other notable prices were £55 for texel cross tup lambs presented by DM & DI Jerman, Moelywigoedd. The average of the day was £43.32. A good entry of in-lamb ewes sold to £90 for welsh mule theave lambs presented by TR Jones, Maescelynog. Welsh mule yearling ewes sold to £78 presented by W Watkin, Caellewellyn. Couples met a strong trade with top price of the day being £137 for suffolk cross three year old ewes with twin lambs presented by D Davies, Maesynant. Welsh mule as found ewes and lambs sold to £115 presented by RG Edwards, Ivy End House.

Monday next 23rd February, catalogue sale of 420 quality store cattle, chiefly charolais cross and limousin cross cattle (sale at 10:15am) with a special entry of a Pedigree Limousin Bull (May 2000) to be sold in the Store Cattle Section at 12noon and 10 Breeding cows and calves (sale at 11am) Next Over Thirty Months Collection - Thursday 26th February . Entries invited for the forthcoming catalogue sales of store cattle and breeding cows and calves (closing date for entries being previous Monday) to be held on Monday 8th, 22nd and 29th March. The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 1,587 store hoggs and breeding sheep at their weekly sale at Longtown on Tuesday 17th February, 2004.

Another good show of store hoggs made extreme rates and were far short of requirements from the large company of buyers that were present. Top of £56.80 for Suffolk crosses from The Hagg, £56.20 High Thorneyburn, £55.20 Dickstree; Texel £56.20 Haithwaite, £55.80 Ridley Stokoe, £55 Dickstree; Charollais £51.50 Haithwaite; North Cheviot £51.20 Adderston Shiels; Greyface £50 The Hagg; Hill Cheviot £45.20 Dunjop; Blackface £44.50 Gillalees, £42.80 Castlefairn; Swaledale £37.80 Naddle, £35.20 Wydoncleughside; Shetland £37.80 Longbrough Fauld. Tup hoggs to £61.50 for Texels from Dickstree; Suffolk £54 Whitchester; Cheviot £54 Whitchester; Blackface £38.80 Dunjop. Cast ewes to £29 for Blackfaces from Castlefairn.

Breeding sheep, including ewes and lambs, were a nice quality entry and were very easy to sell. Top of £47 each for correct Texel ewes with twins from The Green, who also sold correct Greyfaces with twins at £42 each and Greyface shearlings with twins at £39 each. In lamb Greyface hoggs to £63 Taylorburn. Ewe hoggs to £57 for Greyfaces from Taylorburn, who also sold Suffolk crosses at £44; Shetland £37.80 Longbrough Fauld; Herdwick £34.50 Townfoot; Cheviot £35.50 Rushend; Blackface £34 Meikledale.
