The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers' Mart P.L.C. had 74 clean cattle, 16 young bulls, 5,333 prime hoggs and 4,096 cast ewes & rams forward at their weekly sale on Thursday 26th February 2004.

Overall a better show of clean cattle was on offer, all classes were dearer on the week to a top of 125.5p paid by S. Wilson (Butcher), Corby Hill for a Limousin heifer from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn, other Limousins from W.H. & D.A. Gass, Nunscleugh sold to 123.5p and 114.5p to S. Wilson and C.M. Kirkpatrick. Blonde heifers from T. Armstrong & Sons, Sceughdyke sold at 115.5p to C.M. Kirkpatrick. Charolais heifers from Messrs J. Bell, Brydekirk Mains 116.5p to Border Meats, Lockerbie. Top prices in the bullock section of 124.5p and 122.5p for Limousins from J.C. & D. Nicholson, The Gill to Woodhead Bros., Colne and Rose County Foods, Clitheroe, others 120.5p Faulding Cleugh to Woodhead Bros., 119.5p The Gill to Woodhead Bros., 117.5p Wyseby Hill Cottage and Hallburn, 115.5p Faulding Cleugh, 113.5p Hallburn. Charolais bullocks from D.J. Garthwaite & Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage sold at 122.5p to Wm. Kirkup (Butcher), Longtown, Blondes 113.5p Hallburn and Angus' to 107.5p Plumpe. More young bulls were on offer, comprising of mainly over 16 months and non farm assured. Heavyweight Belgian Blues to 95.5p Fawcettlees, Charolais' to 91.5p Fawcettlees, with Black & Whites to 91.5p Newby East.

A similar show of 5,333 prime hoggs was forward, the overall average of 132.8p per kilo was marginally sharper on the week with hoggs peaking at £74 per head for Suffolks from Rascarrell, Auchencairn and 167p per kilo for Beltex's from Dunjop, Bridge of Dee. The 719 lightweight euro hoggs met a very dear trade, levelling at 134.7p, up 7.4p on the week. Top price of £49.50 for Beltex's from from Miller Hill, Gilsland with a top per kilo of 146.4p for Continentals from Caraview, Campbeltown. The first new season lambs of 2004 were a pair of Jacobs which peaked at £52 (130.0p) from The Park.

The 4,096 cast ewes and rams were forward in much larger numbers and with the usual large company of buyers present all classes met a very good trade with heavy ewes in short supply.
