The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 76 prime cattle, 2 young bulls, 2,452 prime lambs, 307 prime hoggs and 2,937 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale on Thursday 1st July, 2004.

A smaller show of 78 prime cattle with quality sorts in short supply in the bullock section, averages were slightly down but trade was dearer. Top price of 124.5p paid by Border Meats, Lockerbie for a Limousin heifer from G.D. Vivers & Sosn, Dornocktown, others to 120.5p (twice), 119.5p Dashwellgreen, 118.5p Becton Hall and Cowans Farm. Bullocks sold to a top of 123.5p for a Limousin from T. Armstrong & Sons, Sceughdyke to Woodhead Bros., Colne, others to 122.5p Hallburn, 121.5p Houghton House, 118.5p Faulding Cleugh and Houghton House, 117.5p Houghton House; Charolais 121.5p Hallburn to Woodhead Bros.; Blonde d'Aquitaine 118.5p Houghton House to Rose County Foods Ltd.; Belgian Blue 117.5p Hallburn to Woodhead Bros.; Simmental 107.5p (730kg) Sceughdyke; Friesian 100.5p (twice), 99.5p and 96.5p Messrs Prudham, Whitefield. Young bulls sold to 113.5p for Limousin from Lough Head with Black & Whites to 95.5p from Westwinds.

A cracking show of 2,452 prime lambs met the highest trade of the week, levelling at 121.8p overall. Buyers were keen for all classes, with a top of £64 per head for Suffolks from Ashcroft, Thurstonfield and to 130.0p per kilo for Texels from Rottington Hall. Charollais cross £60.50 The Kerr; Texel cross £60 Westhills, £58 The Wreay Farm; Cheviot Mule £52.80 Barnglies; Swaledale £48 Spoutbank; Greyface £45.50 Spoutbank; Dorset £44 Red House.

The 727 lightweight euro lambs met a flying trade, with a top of £44.80 per head for Texels from Oak Cottage and to 133.0p per kilo for Suffolk crosses from Haithwaite Farm. Texel cross £43.80 Hetherside; Suffolk cross £43.50 Bush on Lyne; Charollais cross £40 Haithwaite; Cheviot £39.50 Haithwaite; Beulah £39 Jury Park; Bleu d'Maine £38.50 Jury Park; Greyface £37.80 Derwent House; Blackface £37.20 Johnstone Bank; Swaledale £33 Haithwaite.

With 307 head forward, hoggs of all classes were a better show and a brisk trade peaking at £43.50 for Suffolks from Branxholmbraes. Texel £42 Beechcroft; North Country Cheviot £40.50; Hill Cheviot £39.50 Almagill; Blackface £39.50 Newington; Greyface £39 Butterdales; Charollais £34.50 Middlegill; Swaledale £32.50 Pennine View.

The 2,937 cast ewes and rams forward were a larger show, more buyers were operating and all classes were again dearer to average £42.77 overall, being dearer by £2 to £3 on the week with numbers far short of buyers requirements. Top of £72.50 for heavy Beltex ewes from Stackbraes; Texel £66.50 Ballyclare, £63.50 Firth Farm; Charollais £66.50 Ballyclare; Suffolk cross £60.50 Roadside; Half Bred £59.50 Rosewain; Leicester £54.50 Miller Hill; North Country Cheviot £52.50 Ballyclare; Greyface £49.50 Tonehall and Ballyclare, £48.50 Stackbraes; Cheviot Mule £47.50 Branxholmbraes.
