LONGTOWN PRIME STOCK SALE

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 82 prime cattle, 8 young bulls, 2,878 prime lambs and 3,683 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale on Thursday 15th July, 2004.

The cattle overall were a poor show for quality with well finished cattle dearer on the week. A wonderful run of 14 Limousin bullocks from A & W J Taylor, Dashwellgreen sold to a top of 128.5p and averaging 120.3p. Woodhead Bros. paid the top price of 128.5p and 127.5p for Limousins from Dashwellgreen, 126.5p (3 times) for Limousin paid by Rose County Foods and Woodheads, 125.5p (twice) to Woodhead Bros., other Limousins from Faulding Cleugh sold to 120.5p (twice) and 119.5p

Top price in the heifer section of 118.5p (twice) for Limousins from G Smith, Camping Holm and J Blaylock & Son, Hallburn to W Kirkup, Butcher, Longtown and Border Meats Ltd., Lockerbie. A good show of quality young bulls met a dearer trade selling to 121.5p for Limousins from D & L Graham, Southlambhill and 112.5p for Belgian Blues from TL & VM Armstrong, Randalinton.

A top quality show of prime lambs were a credit to the vendors and attracted extra customers. As expected last weeks extreme rates were not maintained, but bidding was sharp throughout to level at 117p per kilo overall. Top was 130.5p for Suffolk crosses from Messrs Thomson, Caberson and 130p for Beltex from Messrs McIlwraith, Mouldy Hills and to £61.20 per head for Texels from Close Nook. Suffolks to £55.50 Fagra, £55 Cardew Hall, Bleu de Maines £52 Pates Hill, Charollais £51.20 Whitehead Hill, Beltex £54.80 Waltonwoodhead and £52 Mouldy Hills. Halfbreds to £46.40 Adderston Shiels. Greyfaces £45.20 Henrys Hill, £45 Haggiston Holm. Blackfaces £43.70 Penpeugh. Top quality prime lambs sold between 120p and 130p per kilo with others between 110 and 115p per kilo.

Lightweight lambs numbered 831 and trade was at extreme rates to average 129.2p per kilo overall, a rise of 5p on the week. Numbers were totally showrt of buyers requirements. Top was 137.7p per kilo for Suffolk crosses from A & H Farming, most light lambs sold between 125p and 135p per kilo. Top price per head was £44.20 for Suffolks from Maxton House and Texels from The Bank Farm. Charollais to £41.20 Bankshead, Greyfaces to £41.70 Maxton House and £40.80 Henrys Hill and Blackfaces to £41.20 Maxton House.

Another good entry of cast ewes and rams were forward and with buyers keen to buy as a result all classes were good to sell at similar rates to last week. Top was £62.50 for Texel ewes from Harene, others to £61.50 Dairy Farm and Close Nook. Suffolk crosses to £55.50 Kirkland Hall and £54.50 Cardew Hall. Suffolks to £56.50 Loughrigg. Charollais to £55.50 Roadside Farm and Smallholm. Halfbreds £49.50 Waterloo. North Country Cheviots £53.50 Enthorn and £50.50 Waterloo. Beltex £46.50 Kirkland Green. Cheviot Mules to £45.50 Close Nook and £44.50 Craigsfordmains. Greyfaces £46.50 Mossbank Farmers, £40.50 Craigfordmains. Hill ewes to £40.50 for Cheviots from Raeburnfoot (Walker).
