The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 116 prime cattle, 9 young bulls, 3,537 prime lambs and 3,670 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale on Thursday 22nd July, 2004.

A mixed show of clean cattle saw overall trade slightly dearer on the week. Limousin bullocks from W.E. Lockhart & Co., Faulding Cleugh sold to 130.5p and 128.5p to Central Meats and G. Moor, other Limousins to 128.5p Hallburn, 126.5p Hallburn and Dashwellgreen; 125.5p Faulding Cleugh; 124.5p (twice) Houghton House and Becton Hall, 123.5p Wyseby Hill Cottage; 122.5p Dashwellgreen, Wyseby Hill Cottage (twice) and Houghton House. Faulding Cleugh sold 5 Limousin bullocks to a top of 130.5p and averaged 125.1p, Wyseby Hill Cottage sold 5 to a top of 123.5p averaging 120.7p, Dashwellgreen sold 12 to a top of 126.5p averaging 118.3p and Houghton House sold 6 to a top of 124.5p averaging 118.2p. The heifer section topped at 121.5p for a Limousin from J.W. Coulthard & Son, Brisco Hill to Woodhead Bros, followed at 120.5p Hallburn. Limousin heifers from Brisco Hill sold to £810.75 to Woodhead Bros. Young bulls were short of requirements, maintaining last weeks good rates with Limousins to 115.5p and 114.5p South Lambhill.

A larger show of 3,537 prime lambs were keenly bid for from the outset, with trade for export weights sharper on the week, leaving all vendors highly delighted. Top of £62 for Texels from Elmside, Eastriggs, others £60.50 for Suffolks from Cardew Hall, Dalston. Top per kilo was 137.3p for Beltex crosses from Quarryfield, Penton with an overall sale average of 117.6p. Texel £58.50 High Greenhill; Charollais £52, £51 North Greenhill; Beltex £51, £50 Whitehead Hill; Cheviot Mule £50 Barnglies; Leicester £49.80 Low Floweryhirst; Greyface £48.50 Dreva Farm; Lleyn £45.80 Netherhirst; Blackface £44.20 Wanwood Hill.

Lightweight euro lambs were a larger show and still good to sell, however, trade did fail to maintain last week's extreme rates. Top of £42 per head and 124.3p per kilo for Texels from Wanwood Hill, Alston. Greyface £40 Coshogle; Cheviot cross £39.80 Shielswood; Beltex £39.50 Hetherside; Suffolk cross £38 Nettling Flatt; Charollais £37.80 The Kennels; Cheviot £37.50 Newington; Dorset £33.50 Redhouse; Blackface £33 Jury Park; Beulah £32.50 Jury Park; Swaledale £27.20 Stonehall.

A similar show of 3,670 cast ewes and rams attracted more distant buyers, all classes proved good to sell with last week's rates being easily maintained. Top of £55.50 for heavy Texel ewes from Ballyclare and £51.50 Derwent House. Suffolks £54.50 Whitcastles Farm; Charollais' £51.50 Ballyclare; Bleu d'Maine £49.50 Dromara; Suffolk cross £47.50 Mossknowe & Cardew Hall, £46.50 Broachrigg; North Country Cheviot £48.50 Dromara, £46.50 Ballyclare; Cheviot Mule £41.50 Aldery Terrace; Greyface £37.50 Tone Hall, £37 Tythe House. Hill ewes to £35.50 for Blackfaces from Teckett; Cheviot £34.50 Oakwood Mill, £32.50 Clerkhill; Swaledale £27.50 Stubsgill and Low Closegill; Herdwick £27.50 Redhouse.
