LONGTOWN PRIMESTOCK SALE

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 92 prime cattle, 8 young bulls, 5,027 prime lambs and 4,448 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale on Thursday 25th November, 2004.

All classes of prime cattle met last week’s good rates.  Limousin bullocks from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn sold to 116.5p to M. Wharton, Butcher, Wigton, others to 114.5p and 113.5p Faulding Cleugh, 112.5p Hallburn, 111.5p Campingholm, 110.5p Dashwellgreen and Hallburn, 109.5p Hallburn, 108.5p Houghton House and Dashwellgreen, 107.5p Haining House; Blonde d’Aquitaine 113.5p Dashwellgreen.  Limousin heifers from Messrs Ritson, Swaites sold to 111.5p to West Scottish, Carlisle, others to 108.5p Slealands, 105.5p South Lambhill and Hallburn.  Heavyweight Charolais heifers sold to 105.5p (twice) from T. Armstrong & Sons, Sceughdyke.  Young bulls were mainly dairy bred kinds selling to 95.5p and 93.5p Harelawhole.

The 5,027 prime lambs were a similar entry on the week.  Best quality lambs would be dearer on the week with others at similar rates.  All abattoirs are demanding clipped below and clean lambs.  Top price per kilo of 136.8p for Beltex crosses from R. Hall & Son, Inglewood Edge, Skelton, with an overall average of 112p.  Top of £56 for Texel and Suffolk cross lambs from Messrs W.L. Musgrave & Son, Cardew Hall, Dalston, other Texels £54 Crumhaugh Hill, £53.20 Low Fauld and other Suffolks £55 Cardew Hall, £53.50 East Cliff and £53 Unity and Tinnis Hall; Beltex £55.60 Mouldy Hills; Charollais £53.20 Honeypot, £51.20 Woodslee, £50.50 Rottington Hall; Greyface £50.20 Randalholm, £48.80 Pitland Hills, £47 Walton Woodhead; Cheviot Mule £50 High Stenries, £49.80 Barnglies; North Country Cheviot £49.50 Adderston Shiels; Blackface £47.50 Easter Tully Fergus, £45.20 Pitland Hills; Swaledale £37 Coldshield.

The lightweight euro lambs were a larger show and dearer to average 113p overall.  Top of £47 per head and 134.3p per kilo for Beltex’s from Inglewood Edge.  Texel £44 Cleughfoot, £43 Tonehall; Charollais £39.20 Nunscleugh; Blackface £38.70 Westloch, £37.20 Caberston; Cheviot £37.20 Beechcroft; Suffolk £37 Englishtown.

The 4,448 cast ewes and rams were a larger show and dearer on the week to average £34.30 overall.  Top of £61.50 for Charollais ewes from Ballyrobert; Texel £58.50 Eden Lodge, £57.50 Walton Woodhead, £56.50 Derwent House; Suffolk cross £58, £54 Hen dy Penrhyn, £53.50 Torwoodlea Mains, £52.50 Seavers Road; Suffolk £57.50 Eden Lodge; Half Bred £55.50 Torwoodlea Mains, £54.50 Eden Lodge, £51 Huntington; Leicester £52.50 Shield, £50.50 Granton and Minsca; North Country Cheviot £48 Huntington and Redbanks, £47.50 Adderston Shiels; Greyface £44.50 Swaites, £43.50 Torwoodlea Mains and Closenook, £42.50 Hott.
