 LONGTOWN PRIMESTOCK SALE THURSDAY DECEMBER  01 2004
 

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 105 prime cattle, 6 young bulls, 5,348 prime lambs and 5,072 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale on Thursday 2nd December, 2004.

All classes of prime cattle again met a fast selling trade, with Limousin heifers from D.J. Garthwaite & Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage, selling to 114.5p to Border Meats, Lockerbie, others to 111.5p Houghton House and Hallburn.  Limousin bullocks to 113.5p from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn, 111.5p Keldhead and Houghton House, 110.5p (x3) Hallburn, 109.5p Slealands and Hallburn, 108.5p Stormont, Wyseby Hill Cottage and Hallburn.  A poor show for quality in the bull section, selling to 94.5p for heavyweights from South Lamb Hill and Sceughdyke.

The 5,348 prime lambs were another fine show and saw a large proportion of heavyweights forward, with best quality kinds in demand for all weight ranges.  Over fat sorts were less easy to sell with buyers more selective.  Top of £56.50 for Charollais’ from Whitehead Hill, Cumwhitton, while export sorts peaked at 129.1p per kilo for Texel crosses from Old Wall, Irthington.  Texel cross £55.50 Whitehead Hill; Suffolk cross £54.20 Boreland and Hermiston; Zwartble £54 Winterhope; Greyface £52.50 Old Police House, £52 Kelmore Hills; Beltex £52 Winterhope, Cardew Hall and Mouldy Hills; Charollais cross £50 East Farm; Cheviot Mule £49.80 High Stenries; Half Bred £49 Plumpe Farm; North Country Cheviot £48.80 Lighthouse; Hill Cheviot £48.50 Thomas Telford Road; Bleu d’Main £48.20 Cardew Hall; Leicester £48 Dreva Farm; Cheviot cross £47.20 Whitechapel; Lonk £47 Bush of Ewes; Blackface £46.80 Whiteclose; Roussin £46.20 Laverhay; Lleyn £46 Partridge Nest; Dorset £41 Satchells; Swaledale £40.50 Morley Hill.

A larger show of 728 lightweight euro lambs were easily cleared at similar rates to a top of £43.80 per head and 128.8p per kilo for Continentals from Pingle, Canonbie.  Hill lambs sold to £42.50 for Cheviots from The Bloch, with Blackface to £39 South Lamb Hill.  North Country Cheviot £40.80 Langholm Farm; Texel cross £39.20 Boreland; Charollais’ £38.80 Crawsknowe; Cheviot cross £38 Upper Brydekirk; Blackface £36 Sunnycroft; Swaledale £32.50 Bateyshield.

A larger show of 5,072 cast ewes and rams saw all the usual buyers in attendance to average £33.60 overall.  Top price of £60 for heavy Texel ewes from Townhouse.  Texel cross £57.50 Roadside, £56.50 Railway Road; Suffolk cross £56.50 Finnis Road, £52.50 Burmoor; Suffolk £54.50 Roadside; Charollais £54.50 Mickley Moor; Beltex cross £53.50 Closenook; Half Bred £49.50 Cardew Hall; North Country Cheviot £46.50 Huntington; Leicester £45.50 Dreva; Greyface £43.50 Cardew Hall. Light ewes sold to a top of £34.50 for Cheviots from Roadside, others £32.50 Stackbraes and Huntington; Blackface £29 Westloch, £28.50 Wanwood Hill and Kersknowe, £28 Nether Kidstone.  Rams to £60 for Texels from Roadside, others £55.50 Cardew Hall; Suffolk £45.50 Morley Hill; Beltex £54.50 Closenook; Dorset £40.50 Roadside; Leicester £40 East Unthank; Blackface £29.50 Finnis Road.
