LONGTOWN PRIMESTOCK SALE

 The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 78 prime cattle,  7,609 prime hoggs and 3,435 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale on Thursday 5th April 2005.

A smaller show of clean cattle with averages the same as last weeks high rates. Bullocks topped at 124.5p for a Limousin from W E Lockhart & Co., Faulding Cleugh and purchased by Woodhead Bros.,  others to 123.5p (twice) The Gill (Nicholson) to Rose County Foods and M Wharton, Wigton, 121.5p (twice) Faulding Cleugh to Woodhead Bros & M. Wharton, 119.5p, 118.5p Faulding Cleugh, 118.5p Houghton House.  Belgian Blue bullocks from Messrs Hogg, Whitehead Hill sold to 118.5p to Woodhead Bros.  Limousin bullocks sold to £852 The Gill.  Limousin heifers topped at 123.5p and 116.5p from J & N Blaylock & Son, Hallburn and purchased by Border Meats, Lockerbie and Rose Country Foods, 115.5p Dashwellgreen.

Another super show of hoggs met keen competition and peaked at £68 for a pen of Continental crosses from East Middles, others to £62.80 Craigview, Suffolk x £58 Allerbeck, Charollais £54.80 Leaona Villa, Halfbreds £53.80 Sceughdyke, Greyfaces £55 The Slack, South Country Cheviots £56.50, £56.20 (twice) Fingland, Cheviot Mules £56 Smalmstown, Cheviot crosses £54.50 Sykehead, Blackfaces £55.50 Sykehead, North Country Cheviots £59.50 Craigview, £59 Petterill Green, Hill Cheviots £58.80, £58.50 Middlestots, £58 Halket Leathes, Swaledales £53.20, £50 The Slack, Herdwicks £46.50, £44.00 Stybeck, Beltex £54.50 Charlesdon.

Lightweight hoggs were another extremely sharp trade, peaking at £44 for Continental crosses from Upper Brydekirk and for Cheviots from ShawheadCheviot  crosses £43 Brocklewath, Texels £43.80 Upper Brydekirk, Blackfaces £43.80 Beechwood, North Country Cheviots £43 Dunain Mains, Swaledales £37 Burnbrae, Herdwicks £39 Greenhills Farm.

Also forward were the first new season lambs of 2005.  Prior the sale Andrew Dawson of Kirkby Lonsdale judged the show.  Champion pen was from R C & W M Brough & Son, Bush on Lyne scaled at 46 kilo and realising £86 (186p/kg) bought by West Scottish Lamb, Carlisle.

The 3435 cast ewes and rams met a further increase in price with all buyers keen to purchase.  The overall average was £36.08 up £2.00 on the week.  Top was £58.50 for Texel ewes from East Middles and Ballyclare, others to £57.50 Close Nook and £56.50 RoundsideHalfbreds to £50.50 Burnfoot on Esk, Suffolks £54.50 Ballyclare, Suffolk crosses £52.50 Whitehead Hill, North Country Cheviots £44.40 Overton, Charollais £53.50 Roadside, Bleu de Maines £56.50 Ballyclare, Rouges £55.50 Roadside, Leicesters £51.50 Drumbretton, Greyfaces £42.50 Milton of Grange, Beltex £51.50 Drumbretton, Cheviot Mules £41.40 Bloch.  Hill ewes to £43.50 for Cheviots from Potholm and £40.50 Dodgsonstown.  Blackfaces £34.50 Eastlandends and Sykehead, £33.50 Hudspeth & Northdeanhead, Swaledales £31 Sykehead, Herdwicks £28 Westend.  Rams to £54.50 for Cheviots from West Watten, £52.50 Eastlandends, Texels £51.50 Eastlandends & Ballyclare, Suffolks £45.50 Drumbretton, Beltex £39.50 Scales, Dorset £47.50 Red House.
