Another good entry of 610 store cattle forward at the auction held on Monday 9th May met with a brisk trade on quality cattle, with steers averaging 121.86ppkg and heifers 104ppkg overall.

A large entry of 820 ewes and lambs present at the auction held on Monday 16th May peaking at £132 (twice) for suffolk yearling ewes with twin lambs at foot from EW Howells & Son, Oakwood, Llanfyllin.

A very large entry of hogs and lambs sold to £127 for suffolk cross hogs with single lambs at foot from RL Roberts and MD Squires, Kemp Brook Farm.  Other notable prices were £125 for suffolk cross hogs with single lambs at foot from PI Bowen, Glanwantyn, Sarn and £120 on two occasions for welsh mule hogs with single lambs from G & CR Davies, Oakfield, Llananno.

 

A good weekly entry of 41 cows and calves met with a patchy trade.  The best outfits were well sought after with second quality being harder sold.  Top price of the day was £1040 for a belgian blue cross 1st calver with a limousin bull calf at foot presented by NE Evans, Tyncelyn, Pontrobert.  An entry of 6, 1st calvers with limousin cross calves at foot from DP Evans, Moelygarth sold to a top of £990, averaging £930.  A belgian blue cross 1st calver with a limousin cross heifer calf at foot from JBC Gwilliam, Bwlchygarth sold for £905.  A limousin heifer, 1st calver with a limousin bull calf at foot sold for £940 from GW Jones, Cross Farm.  A limousin cross 1st calver with a limousin cross bull calf at foot from DCM Andrew, Neuadd Uchaf sold for £890.  A hereford cross 2nd calver with a limousin cross bull calf from HA & DJ Jones, Willows, Wernlas made £800.  Three in-calf simmental heifers from WR Jones & Partners sold from £530-£550.

A further breakdown of the prices was as follows:-

£1000+ = 1 lot, £900-£1000 = 7 lots, £800-£900 = 6 lots, £700-£800 = 4 lots, £600-£700 = 5 lots, £500-£600=9 lots.

 

£480 was realised for the winning bunch of limousin heifers (360kg) which were presented by HD Pugh & M Wynne-Pugh, Tanycoed Ucha, Bryncrug and bought by Mrs IE Goodwin & Son, Sheep House, Hay-On-Wye.

Judge for the sale was Mr Glyn Jerman, Tynwtra, Adfa.  Sponsors were Trefaldwyn Vets, Montgomery..

A larger entry met with a similar trade with all forward being sold.  Top price of the day was £170 for a limousin cross bull calf presented by DJH Vaughan, Plasnewydd, Llanfechain.  A belgian blue cross bull calf from K Howells, Y Ddol, Forden sold for £152.  A limousin cross heifer from DE Jones & Son, Gerlan, Pool Quay sold for £150. A freisian bull calf from the same home sold for £12.  Overall freisian bulls averaged £8.

 

A reduced entry of prime cattle forward with steers averaging 108ppkg and heifers 110.8ppkg.

A limousin cross heifer presented by T & GA Owen & Son, Frochas Farm, Welshpool topped the section selling for 128ppkg and puchased by local butcher John Langford.  Messrs Owen also presented four other medium weight heifer,  making 125ppkg, 119ppkg, 115ppkg and 113ppkg, all purchased by local butchers,

Rikki Lloyd, Mr Bryan Evans of Corwen Butchers, Alan Davies, Berriew and John Langford.

Rikki Lloyd also purchased a limousin cross heavy weight heifer sold by Mrs GM Huxley, Cwm Farm, Cefn Coch for 126ppkg with a belgian blue by EG & D Roberts & Son, Pentre Penarth, Llanfair Caereinion selling for 98ppkg.  Heavy heifers averaged 104ppkg.

A light weight charoalis steer presented by R Ll Roberts, Lower Cefn, Castle Caereinion sold for 104ppkg with John Langford purchasing two medium weight steers for 110ppkg and 109ppkg presented by E Richards, Red House Farm and R Ll Roberts, Lower Cefn.

A bunch of four limousin cross heavy weight steers presented by JJ Price & Co., The Farm, Glynbrochan sold for 120ppkg, 115ppkg (twice) and 107ppkg.  Mr R Roberts, Lower Cefn also sold a charolais for 107ppkg.  Heavy steers averaged 107.9ppkg.

 

More prime lambs forward met with an overall average of 154.5ppkg.

An entry of 1473 cull ewes and rams forward with ewes peaking at £47.50 for a bunch of 11 ewes presented by HM Powell & Son, Whitehouse, Churchstoke.  Others to £44.50 by R Griffiths, Nanty, Llangurig and £44.20 by D Evans & Co., Manor Farm, Marton.  Ewes averaged £26.02.

Rams sold to £53.50 by R Griffiths, Nanty, Llangurig, with others selling to £53 by DG Pugh & Co., Birches, Llanidloes and £49.20 by JR Phillips & Son, Bank Farm, Dolfor.  Rams averaged £36.32.
