The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 120 prime cattle, 11 young bulls, 5,625 prime lambs and 3,610 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale on Thursday 13th October, 2005. A mixed show of cattle, with several lots showing signs of the weather. Quality sorts in short supply but averages up on the week. Top price of 113.5p paid by Woodhead Bros. for a Limousin bullock from W. & W. Faulder, Houghton House, others 109.5p (x3) from Castle Mains, 108.5p Walton Woodhead, 107.5p (x3) Castle Mains, 107.5p Hallburn and Hougton House. Simmental bullocks from L.E. Grice & Son, Newtown sold to 106.5p. Limousin heifers from W.G. & N.A. Lockhart, Wicket Thorn sold to 109.5p to Charles Kirkpatrick, others 106.5p Sceughdyke, 107.5p Hallburn. Young bulls were also slightly dearer on the week, selling to 97.5p and 96.5p for Limousins from D. & L. Graham, South Lambhill; Belgian Blue 95.5p Randalinton. Light weight euro lambs were a plainer show, peaking at £31.20 for Greyfaces from Stackbraes; Cheviot cross £29.80 Tarnside House, Blackface £29.50 Tecket, Greyface £29 Haithwaite, Swaledale £27.20 Highside. The 5,625 prime lambs saw a high proportion of heavy weights, which peaked at £50 for the champion pair of Charollais’ lambs from Eskdale Agricultural Show, owned by Messrs C. & G. Brodie, Pingle, Canonbie and bought by W. Kirkup, Butcher, Longtown.
