New Valtra tractor models at Cereals 2009
Valtra is exhibiting examples of their latest S Series, Direct and Versu models together with an example of a custom built tractor at Cereals 2009 to be held at Vine Farm, Wendy, Nr Royston, Cambridgeshire on Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th June. (Stand 756)

The S352 with SCR represents the S Series, one of five new high powered models between 270 to 370 horsepower. At the heart of these new models are AGCO SISU POWER’s (former Sisu Diesel) 8.4CTA-4V engine coupled to a step-less AVT transmission (AGCO Variable Transmission).

Importantly, the new S Series introduces advanced Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) engine technology for the first time to the agricultural machinery sector. Originally developed for trucks, SCR reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by spraying the urea-based AdBlue additive into the exhaust gas stream.

By introducing this technology to tractors, Valtra reinforces its position as a leader in environmental protection as the new S Series already complies with the Tier/Stage 3B emissions norms for 2011. SCR technology also reduces fuel consumption by approximately 10 percent, allows power to be increased without a corresponding increase in the heat load and prolongs the life of lubrication oil while improving reliability. SCR technology is standard on the S352 model and optional on all other S Series models.

The AGCO Variable Transmission (AVT) represents proven technology, offering operators a more efficient way of working. Driving and engine speeds can be adjusted using the throttle pedal and hand scaling lever or a combination of the two depending on the mode of operation selected.

S Series’ traction, hydraulics and linkages easily control the largest and most complex implements; the rear linkage has a lift capacity of 12 tonnes, the front a lift capacity of 5 tonnes. The hydraulic system provides an output of 175 l/min, 6 hydraulic double acting connectors and a power beyond facility. S Series machines weigh in at around 10,300 kilos, which can be increased to 14,320 kilos using additional weights or 17,640 kilos with twin wheels.

The spacious cab provides a superb working environment - visibility is excellent in all directions. Naturally TwinTrac is available and the reverse-drive controls can be adjusted laterally, making reverse operation even more efficient. Full cab suspension, front axle suspension or the two coupled as Valtra’s award-winning semi-active AutoComfort cab suspension can all be specified. Controls are straightforward, easy to use and are arranged and operated in a way that will be familiar to all Valtra drivers. Additional working lights to the front, rear and sides extend the working day without undue stress. Driver comfort is further enhanced by a refrigerated compartment for cold snacks and drinks. Passengers can sit comfortably and safely in a second seat with seat belt. Naturally, a wide range of options are available on the new S Series, including Isobus implement control, Auto-Guide steering assist and even a driver’s seat with active acclimatisation. As is the custom at Valtra customers can order the specification that meets their farming needs.

Valtra has expanded the N and T Series by the addition of Versu models featuring a five speed powershift transmission and with Direct models featuring a continuously variable transmission

The new transmissions, designed and manufactured in-house by Valtra, share many common components and both are based on the tried and tested three speed powershift which has been popular with customers for several years.

Valtra’s Versu and Direct models are extremely simple to use. There is no gear lever in the already spacious cab and gears on the five-speed transmission are shifted using three buttons ergonomically situated on the driver’s armrest. The step-less transmission is controlled by a scaling lever on the armrest and the throttle pedal or a combination of the two depending on the mode of operation required. On both models the direction of travel is selected using the familiar steering column mounted Valtra Power Shuttle lever. Driving a tractor does simply not get any easier.

With TwinTrac reverse drive becoming increasingly popular, both Versu and Direct operate at very similar speeds and with equal efficiency in both forward and reverse. Both new models are available with ground speed PTO, which opens up new opportunities for forest, peat, limestone and transport contractors while the Versu model also offers creep speeds as part of the standard specification. Naturally a 50-km/h transmission and Valtra’s fuel-conserving EcoSpeed versions are also available.

Because they are mechanically very simple both new transmissions are extremely efficient, changing gear ranges is smooth, as only a single clutch opens and closes. As with all Valtra tractors, the Versu and Direct models may also be operated in conditions of extreme cold since their transmissions are fully disengaged from the engine during start-up.

The N122 model is powered by AGCO SISU POWER (formerly Sisu Diesel) 44 CWA engine, the N142 model by a 49 CWA-4V engine, T132-T172 models by 66 CTA-4V engines and T182-T202 models by 74 CTA-4V engines. All these models have slightly more power and 5 to 17 percent more torque than previous corresponding models. Similarly torque rise has been increased. All Versu models are also available with transport boost for additional power on roads, while the largest T Series have Sigma Power for heavy PTO work. The T162e Versu is a fuel-efficient EcoPower low-rpm model. Valtra and AGCO SISU POWER have co-operated for over 50 years in developing transmissions and engines, which ensures that the main components work perfectly together.

Like Valtra’s Advance models load-sensing hydraulics are standard. Normal output is 115 l/min, but an optional 160 l/min pump is available for demanding implement combinations. The hydraulic and transmission oils have separate reservoirs which prevents oil from the hydraulic services, which may become contaminated, damaging the transmission unit. Heat exchange occurs between the two oils, allowing the transmission oil to heat up the cold hydraulic oil, which in turn cools the hot transmission oil during road transport.

Heavy-duty linkages and an industrial front axle with brakes are available for demanding tasks. The HD linkages have a lifting capacity of 85 kN and are available on models T162 and above. A braked front axle can also now be specified on these larger T Series models and features two brake discs per side. T Series is available with either a 50 kN or 35kN front lift linkage; both are compatible with Aires front axle suspension, while the 35kN linkage may also be fitted with a loader. When operating a Direct model with loader, a hydraulics assistant automatically increases engine speed, to improve loader cycle times.

The new Versu and Direct models are simple to service with daily inspection points easily accessible. The new transmissions provide customers with a greater choice, allowing them to tailor their tractor more accurately to their farming needs. New Versu and Direct models extend Valtra’s current range models and N and T Series may still be specified in Classic, HiTech and Advance format with three powershift speeds.

A Valtra feature has been appreciated by many customers is the ability to specify their tractor to meet the demands of their farm or contracting business – all farms are different and their requirements many and varied. To highlight this unique feature Valtra will be exhibiting an N Series machine on the Cereals Stand which has been specified with many unusual features including chromed wheels and exhaust, unusual paint work; Valtra are the only manufacturer to offer customers a choice of colours and the driver’s, company or farm name on the cab, and several other unique features. A second similar machine will be found on the Farmers Weekly stand and customers will be invited to enter a competition giving them 3 month’s free use of the tractor plus the opportunity to purchase the machine at 25% discount.
